We are Vulcan's Anvil
|
We are a group of students from Fullerton and Cypress College studying mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, physics, and computer science who have come together to participate in the NASA-sponsored Micro-g NExT Challenge. The program offers three challenges of which we have chosen the first: design and manufacture a device that can anchor to a celestial body in microgravity. We hope to complete the challenge successfully as well as share our experiences with the community to further engage others in space exploration related activities. As part of the challenge, we will gain hands-on experience working cooperatively to design a device, build a prototype, and experiment with our prototype to learn the skills necessary to work on similar team projects in the future.
To inform the community of our project, we have developed this website that tracks our progress via blog posts/videos, shares informative facts about space exploration, and inspires future students to pursue similar opportunities. We will also share our progress through various social media outlets to reach younger populations and encourage them to pursue STEM-related careers. Additionally, we will visit local elementary, middle, and high school classrooms to present a lesson that is aligned to national educational standards and exposes children to the current challenges NASA is trying to solve for further space exploration. For many of us on the team who are first generation college students, this is a unique opportunity and experience which we hope to leverage for furthering our academic and career goals. |
